Mitochondria and Energy: How to Build Vitality as You Age

Your body runs on more than willpower

People often talk about energy as though it’s a mindset problem. Or a sleep problem. Or something that can be solved with another coffee, a better morning routine, or a stern word with yourself.

It isn’t.

Low energy is rarely just about motivation. It is a whole-body issue, because the truth is this: your life can only expand to the level your body can support.

And that brings us to mitochondria.

Mitochondria: tiny engines for a bigger life

Mitochondria are tiny structures found inside almost every cell in your body. They’re often described as your body’s powerhouses.

Fair enough. But even that undersells them.

They don’t simply help produce energy. They influence how well you adapt, repair, recover and respond to the demands of everyday life. In many ways, they help determine whether you feel strong, energised and resilient… or exhausted, frail and forever trying to catch up.

I like to think of mitochondria as the staff behind the scenes in a beautiful luxury hotel.

They’re discreet. You don’t necessarily notice them when everything is running smoothly - but you absolutely feel the difference when they are doing their job well. Things flow, systems work and the whole experience feels seamless.

That is what healthy energy feels like in the body.

You move through the day with more ease, you think more clearly, recover more quickly and crucially… you feel like yourself again.

When mitochondria are struggling, life starts to feel harder than it should. Not always in dramatic ways… it often starts quite subtly. You might just feel flat, your mind feels a bit foggy and you feel ess able to meet life with energy and enthusiasm.

If your energy is flat, start here

This matters deeply to me, because I am not interested in helping people merely get through the day.

I want people to build bodies they can trust.

Bodies that support travelling to far-flung places. Hiking in spectacular scenery. Gardening without worrying about back ache. Saying yes on impulse. Carrying, lifting, reaching, stretching, living.

That is the point.

Energy is not just about feeling less tired. It is about having the capacity to live fully.

And here is the good news: mitochondria respond to the signals you give them.

This is one reason I feel so strongly about creating movement methods that send the body a clear message that it needs to stay strong, adaptable, resilient and energised in order for you to live your one wild and beautiful life.

The body is more dynamic than we were taught to believe

There is another layer here that I find fascinating.

Professor Gerald Pollack’s work at the University of Washington has explored what happens to water next to hydrophilic surfaces such as collagen. His lab describes this as a more ordered “exclusion-zone” water, with intriguing implications for charge, light and energy in living systems.

Because collagen is such a major component of connective tissue and fascia, it opens up an interesting conversation about the body as something far more dynamic and responsive than we were once taught to believe.

That is worth paying attention to. Because your body is not a collection of isolated parts. It is an ecosystem with each system in constant conversation with each other.

Muscle, fascia, hydration, light, sleep, stress, nourishment, breath, rhythm, recovery - they all shape the energy available to you.

Which means energy is not something you simply “have” or “don’t have”.

It is something you build. Or neglect.

The real reason your energy is more important than you might think

This is where so many people come unstuck - they look for stimulation instead of capacity.

Coffee instead of nourishment. Willpower instead of structure. Motivational quotes instead of the daily inputs that actually help the body adapt and thrive.

But true vitality is built differently.

It is built through:

  • movement that challenges the body enough to adapt

  • sleep that gives the body time to repair

  • daylight that helps regulate your internal clocks

  • food that nourishes rather than merely fills you up

  • a nervous system that is not permanently being driven like the getaway car in Baby Driver - I know it's impressive, but it's not a sustainable lifestyle

So if you’ve been feeling flat, foggy or somehow not quite yourself, maybe it’s worth asking a better question.

Not “What’s wrong with me?” But: What signals am I giving my body every day?

Because your body is always listening, adapting and responding to the conditions you create.

A final thought

You do not need to settle for dragging yourself through life feeling one step behind.

Your energy shapes your options. It shapes your confidence, your resilience, your recovery, your willingness to say yes and your ability to keep showing up for the life you want.

Protecting and building that energy is not indulgent. It is absolutely foundational.

If this has made you realise that your body needs more than good intentions and occasional bursts of motivation, that is exactly why I created my work the way I did.

I help people build strong, adaptable, energised bodies through intelligent movement and simple, powerful lifestyle shifts that support real life - not just exercise for exercise’s sake.

Because the goal is not simply to get through the day.

It is to build a body that supports the life you want to live.
