During lockdown a friend organised an online book club for a group of us all involved in wellness in some way. Of all the books we read there was one book that particularly resonated with me and changed the course of my life.

It wasn’t a scientific textbook. It wasn’t a trendy wellness protocol.

It was The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner - a beautifully simple book that introduced me to five places in the world where people live longer, healthier, and more joyfully than almost anywhere else on the planet.

But it wasn’t just the longevity that captivated me but the way these people lived. With ease. With rhythm. With purpose.

These weren’t communities chasing the latest fitness fads or jumping from one diet to another.

They were simply living in ways that aligned with their bodies, their values, their communities, and the natural world around them.

Reading about Okinawa, Sardinia, Ikaria, Loma Linda, and Nicoya sparked something deeper in me.

I started researching the science behind healthy longevity, the process of how we age and the impact that has on our lives.

I devoured books, studies, and research papers. I did courses and tried different protocols out on myself. 

And it got me thinking: 

What if we could bring this kind of wisdom into our modern lives - without needing to uproot everything … or move mountains? Without having to spend ££££s on oxygen chambers, advanced medical interventions, high tech procedures or truck loads of supplements?

That set me on an exciting journey of discovery.

One that eventually led to the creation of The Vitality Blueprint, and everything I’ve built since.

What I Took From the Blue Zones (and still use every day)

> Movement isn’t optional - but it doesn’t have to be ‘exercise.’

In the Blue Zones, movement is woven into the day: gardening, walking, standing, squatting, lifting.

It’s not about squeezing in a workout - it’s about making movement a way of life.

(If you’ve ever joined one of my programmes, this will sound familiar.)

Food is slow, seasonal, and social.

No restrictive diets. No biohacks. Just real, nutrient-dense meals - often homegrown and often shared with others. There’s ritual, reverence, and a pace that invites digestion on every level.

Connection matters more than discipline.

One of the most powerful protective factors in these communities is the sense of belonging.

They prioritise family, friendships, intergenerational connection, and a sense of being needed.

It’s not willpower that keeps them going … it’s love.

Stress relief isn’t an afterthought.

Prayer, naps, nature, gratitude… These aren’t things people “fit in” when they’re burned out.

They’re part of the daily rhythm. A nervous system reset, built into daily life.

Purpose gives energy.

From caring for grandchildren and farming, to volunteering or tending the garden - everyone has a role.

A reason to get up in the morning. And that reason, it turns out, is one of the most powerful sources of vitality we have.

How I’ve Woven This Into My Life and Work

Since reading The Blue Zones, I’ve been on a quiet mission:

To distil its lessons into something that works for the modern world - with all its messiness, noise, and pressure.

Not as rules to follow.

But as rhythms to remember.

As a way to come home to yourself.

This is the foundation of everything I now teach inside THE WELL, ELEVATE, and THRIVE.

It’s not about “getting it right.”

It’s not about doing it “perfectly” - it’s about taking imperfect action.

It’s about living in a way that feels like you’ve come home to yourself.

It’s about feeling more you.

Stronger, steadier, more spacious in your mind and body and able to meet life with joy and vitality.

That’s what the Blue Zones taught me…

And it’s what I hope to pass on to you.
